During the nineties, at the instigation of the Cervantes Institute, the Department of Libraries and Documentation undertook to compile basic information about the demographics of the Spanish language, the teaching of Spanish as a second language, cultural policies, etc. in official and cultural institutions representing Spain abroad (embassies, consulates and Cervantes Institute branches). The update has been carried out after thorough research of databases and specialized periodicals.
