Each year, the International Book Fair alternates with Madrid
Liber will be back in Barcelona, in September, with Puerto Rico as guest of honour
The culture of Puerto Rico will be highlighted at the next edition of Liber, the International Book Fair, which will take place from the 29th of September to the 1st of October in Fira de Barcelona’s Gran Via exhibition centre. The show, which alternates annually with Madrid, will be back this year in the Catalan capital with the latest from the market and numerous side events in which to debate the challenges and opportunities for the future of the national and international publishing industry.
Promoted by the Spanish Federation of Publishers’ Guilds (FGEE), Liber is the sector’s leading professional event in Spain and Latin America and one of the most important in the world. It is aimed at all professionals of the book industry, such as publishers, booksellers, distributors, librarians, authors, teachers, graphic arts professionals, literary agents and service providers (software, forwarders, etc).
The show hopes to bring together around 700 of the sector’s publishing houses and companies from 15 countries, as well as representatives of book-related associations and organisations. Some 12,000 professionals from 60 countries are expected to attend.
Through a series of activities, Liber 2010 will showcase the culture and literary tradition of Puerto Rico, this year’s guest of honour. It will also host a packed programme with more than 50 conferences and sessions dedicated to promoting the publishing industry and debating new challenges and opportunities, such as the incorporation of new technologies and digital contents, eco-publishing and new distribution formulas.
As in previous years, the fair will also provide the setting for the Reading Promotion Awards to the Communications Media, in the categories of Radio, Television and Press, the Liber Tribute to an institution or person in recognition of their work in favour of books, the Boixareu Ginesta Award to the bookseller of the year and the Award for Promoting Reading in Public Libraries.
Liber is sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, the Spanish Foreign Trade Institute (ICEX), the Catalan Generalitat, the Barcelona Town Council’s Institute of Culture, the Spanish Centre for Reprographic Rights (CEDRO) and the Publishers Guild of Catalonia.
