New Spanish Books, a UK Web site backed by the Spanish Institute for Foreign Trade (ICEX) and the Spanish Publishers Association (FGEE), has announced a call for new titles to be included in their fall selection of featured titles for translation. A more established version of the German site launched this March, the UK site offers consumer- and trade-friendly news of Spanish books coming out in English, interviews with Hispanophile editors and booksellers, and articles on the past and present of Spanish literature.
The Spanish industry blog Ediciona reports that the main objective of the site is to encourage more translations of Spanish books, and to this end it includes a searchable database of over 1,000 new books from more than 300 agencies and publishers. A panel of industry pros has also been convened to choose and post the most promising books for the UK market (a separate panel will do the same for the German market). Publishers and agencies shall submit no more than three titles for consideration to the panel, which will meet twice a year in time for the international book fairs. The selections for this fall will be released in time for the 2010 Frankfurt Book Fair, where Argentina is to be the Guest of Honour.
