Illegal book downloads reached a value of 200.5 million Euros during the last six months of last year, which amounts to average piracy rate of 19.7%. These are but a few figures, the first ones to be available for the book market, which resulted from the first observational study of piracy and consumption habits of digital content.
This analysis, promoted by the Coalición de Creadores (Coalition of Creators), of which is CEDRO (Spanish Center for Reprographic Rights) is part, and undertaken by IDC Research Iberia, will be carried out every six months among consumers of digital content between 16 and 55 years of age.
According to the study data, which also includes information about music, videogames and films, the total valued of pirated content reached 5.12 billion Euros and the average piracy rate comprised 76% of the market (by sector: 95.6% for music, 83.7% for films, 52.3% for videogames, and 19.7% for books). Despite the fact that 69% of book consumers would be willing to pay for downloads, the President of the Coalición de Creadores (Coalition of Creators), Aldo Olcese, expressed concern for a possible increase in book piracy once the use of E-readers becomes more widespread
