Bronx bilingual special education teacher helps students break down language, learning obstacles.

Hometown Hero nominee Eva Rivera is a bilingual special education teacher charged with helping youngsters break down the language and learning obstacles they face in school.

Successes are hard won in Eva Rivera’s classroom at Middle School 244 in the Bronx. But celebrated, too.

Rivera is a bilingual special education teacher charged with helping youngsters break down the language and learning obstacles they face in school.

Most of her students speak Spanish at home, and each has a different story.

Some struggle with intellectual and emotional disabilities while others have challenges with learning.

But once they are in her classroom, they become a family, Rivera said.

“We discuss different styles of learning and talk about acceptance and differences,” she said. “I create high expectations but I don’t want anyone to feel uncomfortable.”

Rivera’s dedication to her students has earned her a nomination for the Daily News Hometown Heroes in Education award.
