Texas recognizes the importance of dual-language programs

Science Hill Elementary is one of the schools in that state implementing education in English and Spanish. Texas is one of the country’s leaders for the number of dual-language programs across the country. According to The College Board, students with an average of four or more years of a foreign language study scored higher on the verbal section of the SATs.

“In a dual language program, students learn other subjects in a second language. 'Typically with kids we don’t see hesitation, they just jump in there and do it,' Soor-El Puga, principal of Science Hill Elementary, said. 'Even more so than adults.' The idea is to teach students a new language beginning in kindergarten so they can become fluent in two languages at once.”
