A recent study published by the Children's Book Center warned of the significant lack of ethnic diversity in children's picture books. Specifically, less than 2% of children's books were Latino issues and only 1.5% (or 48 books) of the 3,200 children's books published in 2013 in the United States were from Latin authors. In an effort to change these alarming statistics one book at a time, the national bilingual literacy campaign Read Conmigo, will launch the contest "Preserving our Culture through Bilingual Literacy" for aspiring Latino authors of children's books in the area of Southern California. The contest runs through Hispanic Heritage Month and will end October 31, 2014.
