He studied Political Science and Sociology at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and in 1993 obtained dual nationality. He is the cofounder of the magazine Margen and has worked as a journalist and literary critic for various newspapers and magazines in Europe and America, as well as cultural programs on Spanish television. In 1981 he received the Jauja Prize for Short Stories, and in 2002 the Chinese Ministry of Culture awarded him with the National Prize for Excellence in Foreign Literature for the Chinese version of García Márquez: The Journey to the Seed, the celebrated biography of the Nobel prize-winning Colombian that has been translated into twelve languages. He is also the author of the collection of poems Voces del Barrio (Voices from the Barrio) and a book of essays from the 19th through the 20th centuries. He has been working on several novels including La subasta del fuego (The Auction of Fire), about Simón Bolívar's lover, Manuela Sáenz, and her twenty years of exile, abandonment and solitude in the Peruvian port of Paita.
