What would have happened to Spain without the drain of human capital that occurred during and after the Civil War? The study of the life and work of the exiles—considered to be "Anti-Spain" by the victors—helps us to imagine an answer. In fact, as the historian Enrique Moradiellos has written, it took Spain a long time to recover from that "human hemorrhage", that forced absence of minds and bodies. The recovery of the memory of the exiles—and of the Republic in exile—forms an important part of recent Spanish historiography. But among all the "exiles" that have been studied—to Europe, to Mexico, inside Spain herself—it is perhaps the exile to Cuba that has received the least attention. The publication of this book attempts to compensate for that neglect. Jorge Domingo Cuadriello dedicated fifteen years of research to the writing of this detailed and thorough study of the Republican exiles in Cuba. The author traces a political-ideological map of the local Spanish community and explains how the two sides fighting in Spain had their correlatives on the island. An important and innovative contribution is a biographical- bibliographical dictionary which details the life and activities of both the exiles and the most important visitors to the community.
