Jorge Luis Borges was born in Buenos Aires on Aug. 24, 1899. Considered one of Latin America’s foremost literary figures, he was especially known for his inventive short stories, fictive essays and poetry.

In 1914, he and his family traveled to Europe and took up residence in Geneva, where the adolescent Borges attended high school. Upon his return to Argentina, he and several other writers founded the literary journal Proa and in 1923 Borges published Fervor de Buenos Aires, his first book of poetry.

Historia universal de la infamia, Ficciones,  El Aleph, Historia de la eternidad and El libro de arena are some of his most ingenious creations.

Borges devoted a large part of his life to poetry and also wrote many essays and other literary works in collaboration with Adolfo Bioy Casares and other authors.

He died in Geneva on June 14, 1986.
