Roberto Bolaño

Born in Santiago, Chile in 1953. Bolaño was one of Latin America’s foremost contemporary authors. He lived a nomadic existence in his youth, living at different times in Chile, Mexico (working there as a journalist at age 15), El Salvador, France and Spain.

In 1999, Bolaño’s novel Los detectives salvajes won the prestigious Romulo Gallegos Prize, which is considered Latin America’s equivalent of the Nobel Prize in Literature and has also been awarded to Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Mario Vargas Llosa.

Bolaño died in Barcelona, Spain in July 2003.
