A poet and playwright, Alberti was born in 1902 in the Spanish port city of El Puerto de Santa Maria, near Cádiz (Spain). During the 1936-1939 civil war he became a political activist and headed several Communist-oriented magazines.
He lived in exile until 1977, after Francisco Franco’s death. The last poet of the Generation of ’27, some of his most important published works include Marinero en tierra, Sobre los ángeles, Cal y canto and Sermones y moradas.
The winner of the National Literature Prize in 1925 and the Cervantes Prize in 1983, Alberti is considered one of the greatest poets in Spanish literature.
He died in Madrid in 1999. Links:
