"I do not want to sound arrogant, but I need no advice to choose an author”
Literary agent Andrew Wylie, nicknamed The Jackal, chats with EL PAÍS from the Guadalajara Book Fair

Nicknamed The Jackal, and with a reputation as a widow charmer, in the past few years he has been able to score the entire book catalogs of Jorge Luis Borges, Guillermo Cabrera Infante and Roberto Bolaño (of whom he has rescued three posthumous books, causing a big brouhaha in the publishing world). The roster of literary agent extraordinaire Andrew Wylie (Boston, 1947) includes over 1,100 authors. But of those, only 10 write in Spanish –among them Muñoz Molina, Jordi Soler, Castellanos Mora and Rey Rosa. That is the reason he decided to come to the Guadalajara Book Fair.

After a thwarted agreement with Carmen Balcells’ agency –an agreement that would have given him access to Gabriel García Márquez and Mario Vargas Llosa, he has placed his trust on his new man in charge of the Literature in Spanish division: Cristóbal Pera, former head of Penguin Random House in Mexico and a friend of García Márquez’s children. Dressed in a bespoke blue cotton suit, white shirt and tie, The Jackal receives EL PAÍS in his suite at the Hilton Hotel.
