FNAC and Kobo team up to challenge Amazon and Casa del Libro in the electronic book market

The market for e-books in Spain is relatively small (around 5% of sales if one only takes into account traditional publishers rather than self-published editions and forgets about......

pirated copies) and is dominated by Amazon, followed in a very distant second place by Casa del Libro’s online store and the Nubico subscription service (both a part of the Grupo Planeta). So, the space remaining for their competitors (Fnac, El Corte Inglés, Libelista) is purely nominal. Trying to make some room for themselves next to the near monopolies, Fnac and Kobo have signed an agreement to provide a competitive alternative, they announced today.

Kobo is an e-bookshop created in Canada which was acquired by the Japanese e-book multinational Rakuten. It has an international catalogue of five million books while at the moment Fnac only offers Spanish e-books through its Libranda platform. In addition to drastically expanding its catalogue, the agreement also allows Fnac to sell the Japanese firm’s next generation reading devices.”
