The founder of Books & Books and co-founder of Miami Book Fair will be awarded the ArtesMiami Lydia Cabrera Award on Oct. 14. He’ll be the first non-Hispanic to receive the award.

ArtesMiami founder Aida Levitan says Kaplan, a Miami native, has benefited Hispanic writers in many ways.

“Not only has he distinguished himself because he owns one of the most successful independent bookstore chains in the country, he also co-founded an event that’s important to Hispanic authors here and around the world, and that’s the Miami Book Fair,” she says. “We’re so grateful for him.
