District adding four dual immersion classes

Spanish-English program is in high demand. It currently has 480 students.

Sixth-grader Justin Dufault walked to the lawn behind Colter Elementary School last week so he could read a fable he wrote in Spanish to his third-grade partner. As he sat under an overcast sky, the Jackson Hole Middle School student read about a pineapple and carrot who lost their dog.

“They don’t get their dog back,” Justin said, “because they try to use violence to solve their problem.” The exercise Justin practiced on the cloudy day was similar to many activities the dual immersion student has been asked to do: The 11-year-old is often required to combine curriculum from two of his courses. Last week he used the problem-solving principles he learned in English for his Spanish writing assignment.
