“The growth exceeds that of the previous year, which was 0.6% according to data from Spanish publishers. Bookshops continue to be the primary sales channel. To mark the celebration next Saturday, the 23rd of April, the International Book Day, the executive director of the FGEE, Antonio María Ávila......

has announced that the increase in earnings in the past year exceeded that of 2014. However, he pointed out that the losses suffered after the crisis have not been recovered: a 40% shrinkage in the market has only been reduced to 20%. (…)

He also expressed his ‘sadness’ that the recovery has not affected every sector and says that bookshops “which remain our first and foremost sales channel are continuing to suffer while their losses cut deeper.” (…)

With regard to pirated books, Ávila referred to information from the Coalition of Content Creators and Industries published on 31 March that show an increase in pirating in the book world , the fastest growing sector in recent years, as he noted. In fact, in 2015 390 million illegal accesses were recorded to books on the internet with a market value of 3.131 billion euros. Over 45% of the accesses occurred in content that was less than a year old, three points higher than in 2014.”
