Monica Rodriguez wins Spain's Anaya Children's Literature Award for a story on an immigrant girl.

"Alma y la isla" (Alma and the island) is the story of a black girl who is rescued from a small boat by a fisherman who takes her to live with his family for a few days.

Monica Rodriguez is the winner of the XIII Anaya Children and Young Adult's Literature Award which rewards her with 12,000 Euros for her book "Alma y la isla" (Alma and the island).

This is a story for 10 year-old children about how different cultures collide when an immigrant girl and a family who saves her from drowning face challenges to adjust to each other, to become a strong friendship relationship.

The winner was selected from 103 original works turned in from different countries besides Spain, such as Argentina, Chile, Korea, the U.S., France, Mexico and Portugal.
