UCLA creates bilingual program to foster science, math.

The University of California at Los Angeles has created a Spanish-language program to help students who do not speak English prepare for courses in mathematics and the sciences.

The SOL Project, designed by the Civil Rights Project/Proyectos Derechos Civiles at UCLA, will launch this summer at West Adams Preparatory High School in Los Angeles by field-testing the intensive algebra course. Some 55 sophomores have enrolled in the intensive, five-week program, studying algebra five hours a day, five days a week with instructions available in Spanish.

The only requirement for enrolling in the course is that a student must be studying English.

The online course is designed to help students understand complex concepts in their own language while they are listening to a lesson in a different language. "Sol" means "sunny" in Spanish, but here stands for Secondary Online Learning.
