Musical CD brings to children the story of seven amazing women

“A Real Story. Stories to Be Heard, Heroines to Be Discovered” features seven children musical stories about the lives of seven real women, unjustly neglected by history and whose adventures and contributions deserve to be better known.

The project, to be financed by a crowdfunding campaign commencing on November 3, is the brainchild of the Madrid co-operative Pandora Mirabilia. This non-profit organization, specializing in gender and communication issues, is comprised of four women journalists and educators who have developed numerous educational, research and communication projects. After several years work analyzing children’s stories and their use as non-sexist educational tools, the group decided to address the topic more creatively by writing their own stories.

The CD is further enhanced by the participation of Camila Monasterio, a musician who has just released her first album (http://camilamusica.net/) and who composed the songs heard on the CD as well as several stories.

The stories are inspired by seven women from various historical eras in diverse fields of endeavor (culture, science, human rights, education, and medicine, among others). These women are:

  • Alice Guy (France, 1873-1968), a pioneer in film.
  • Miriam Makeba (South Africa, 1932-2008), singer and anti-apartheid activist.
  • Valentina Tereshkova (Russia, 1937-), the first woman astronaut.
  • Gaura Devi (India, 1925-1991), activist for the ecological movement Chipko.
  • María Elena Caso (Mexico, 1915-1991), scientist specializing in marine biology.
  • School Teachers of the 2nd Spanish Republic (1931-1936).
  • Trotula of Salerno (Italy, 11th Century), medical pioneer in obstetrics and gynecology.

The crowdfunding campaign will be held on the website Verkami through December 13, 2014.
